The 4 myths about Tombois

Tombois are girls or women who prefer mannish activities than the typical feminine routines regardless of their sexual preference. Just like gays and lesbians, tombois gain a lot of misconceptions in the society. They usually get a lot of banters and teasing because of the strong lifestyle they’re living in. In this article, tomboiurbanlifestyle.com will try to break those erroneous connotations about our beloved tombois.

1.     Myth: Tombois are kids who are not sure of who and what they are.

Fact: They are not just girls but also women of different ages. Deviance (not confusion) in the younger generations is more common. According to experts, it is a normal behavior among pre-pubescent kids not to conform to the expected norms or patterns of their gender. They call it childhood gender nonconformity phenomenon.

2.     Myth: All tombois are lesbians.

Fact: There is a huge difference between tombois and lesbians. As we defined tombois in the first part, it is a lifestyle not a sexual orientation. It involves activities, leisure, and fashion of the adventurous femme. Although there is a correlation between tombois and lesbianism, one’s behavior is not a true indicator of her sexual preference.

3.     Myth: Tombois must look exactly like a boy.

Fact: Tomboi fashion has evolved through the years. It is not about looking like a boy but it is the exciting yet eccentric mix and match of men and women’s clothes. Today, tomboi fashion already created its signature look that it has its staples and must-haves for every tomboi’s wardrobe.

4.     Myth: Being a tomboi is just a phase in life.

Fact: It varies for one person to another and we cannot generalize it to all tomboi femmes out there. Being a tomboi is an option, a simple choice in life. One can be a tomboi as a kid but may end up a super girly girl later in life or one may be a tomboi from childhood to motherhood. Being a tomboi is a matter of choice.
